Most cards start from a club’s real league season and that season’s team statistics from FBref (Sports Reference). National-team cards and cards marked "Hand-researched" also use other public sources, such as UEFA and FIFA technical reports and match reports, and every card lists its sources. On automatically generated cards, the five style axes are ranks against every other team in the same league and season, so they show how a team played next to its rivals, not on a fixed scale.
A card is a starting point to try in your own save, not a guaranteed result. Your squad is different and the FM match engine is its own system, so it will not play out exactly the same.
On generated cards, each axis is read from these numbers, with the figure and league rank shown next to it.
On generated cards, the formation is the shape the team used most in the league that season, and team instructions follow from the axes: only those with a clear signal in the data get a value, and the rest stay at the FM default, shown faded. Roles and attribute targets are suggestions for each position, not the real players’ attributes.
Most cards are generated automatically and say how many matches were measured. Not all of them have been checked by a person, so a card with a known problem carries a notice. Cards marked "Hand-researched" were researched one by one from public sources instead of being generated. When the same club-season also has generated data, their five axes use the same league ranking, and any other axes written by hand move to "Further notes"; the few that share a common template say so. "Data sample" shows how much match data sits behind a card, and "New" means it has few recommendations from visitors so far.
FM26 tactics hold one shape with the ball, one without it and the switch between them. Chained rotations, movement triggered by where the ball is and automatic changes by score or time cannot be set, so a card carries only what the game can take.
