This map ranks all 20 Ligue 1 teams of 2022–23 on the five style axes behind our FM26 tactic cards: pressing intensity, defensive line, tempo, width and build-up. The tables below show the teams at each end of every axis, the chart sets pressing against possession, and the full grid for all 20 teams is at the bottom.
What the five axes measure
- Pressing Intensity — Tackles won, interceptions and fouls, ranked twice and combined: once per game and once relative to the time spent without the ball, with the second ranking counted double.
- Defensive Line — Opponents caught offside per game. Teams that hold a higher line usually catch more.
- Tempo — Shots per game.
- Width — Crosses per game.
- Build-Up — Share of possession. The cards read more of the ball as a shorter build-up.
Every rank is within this league’s 20 teams for this season.
Pressing against possession
PSG: first on the ball, last for width, one point clear
Paris Saint-Germain won with 85 points, one ahead of Lens on 84. They led tempo (14.8 shots a game) and possession (60.7%) but ranked 20th of 20 for width, with 10.5 crosses a game. Their pressing was 12th overall: 20th on the plain per-game count of tackles won, interceptions and fouls, 9th once time without the ball is counted. The pattern continued in the 2023–24 report.
Lens: 84 points through the wings
Lens crossed 20.8 times a game, 2nd in the league behind Nantes (21.6), and finished 2nd. Nantes finished 16th with 36 points. Lens ranked 16th for pressing.
Lyon pressed hardest, Marseille held the lowest line
Lyon ranked 1st for pressing on both counts and finished 7th with 62 points, changing manager during the season. Marseille were 2nd for pressing and 2nd for tempo (14.4 shots a game), but had the lowest defensive line (0.8 offsides a game), and finished 3rd with 73 points. Rennes had the highest line (2.4) and finished 4th with 68.
The bottom of the table
Troyes ranked last for pressing and last for possession (42.6%), and finished 19th with 24 points. Ajaccio had the lowest tempo (8.2 shots a game) and finished 18th, and Angers finished bottom with 18 points.

† Changed manager during the season. The figures are the team’s whole season, so they mix more than one manager’s games; the card is filed under one of them, with the number of games that manager took. Teams without a card (—) are kept as a team record only, usually because no manager was in charge for most of the season.
Notes and sources
- Teams level on a stat share a place, shown as =3rd. Auxerre and Lille share 3rd for defensive line, and Lorient and Toulouse share 17th, so those tables show four teams.
- Figures are rounded to one decimal place, while ranks use the unrounded figures. Strasbourg, Auxerre and Lille all show 2.2 opposition offsides a game, but Strasbourg rank 2nd and the other two share 3rd.
- † marks a team that changed manager during the season: Lyon, Nice, Reims, Montpellier, Brest, Strasbourg, Nantes, Auxerre, Troyes and Angers. Their figures cover the whole season, so they mix more than one manager's games. Montpellier, Strasbourg and Angers have no FM26 card because no single manager had enough games.
- Paris Saint-Germain and Lens link to a hand-researched card instead. Its five axes show the same ranks as this report, but the rest of the card was researched and written separately and describes the manager’s approach in its own words, so it may not line up with every number here.
